Welcome !
Horsham Youth Council is also known as HYPER (an acronym for Horsham Young People's Elected Representatives). HYPER aims to give young people living in Horsham the opportunity to have a say and make a difference at a local level.
Links with the Council’s Chief Executive and the Councillors mean that we can get our views across to the people who are making decisions. We meet fortnightly on a Monday from 4.30pm-5.15pm. Meetings are informal, fun and you get biscuits! Anyone who is 13-18 years old can get involved. If you want to have a say we want to hear from you!
What are youth Councils
The aim of youth councils is to provide a forum that will enable the opinions of young people to be heard and encourage their active involvement in community decision making.
In other words it gives us an opportunity to put forward our views and ideas about what's happening locally. What's more the Councillors and other people who make decisions are really keen to listen to what we've got to say.
Our Link With West Sussex Youth Cabinet
The West Sussex Youth Cabinet is a group of democratically elected young people whose job it is to help other young people. They do this by:
- Helping young people with any problems they have;
- Representing young people at meetings and events, where previously they might have been forgotten;
- Voicing young people’s opinions so that adults consider them and young people too;
- Informing young people about important issues (political and social);
- Running events to inform young people and help them have a say;
- Producing films, radio broadcasts and podcasts, animations, games, posters, leaflets etc… to raise awareness of issues that are important to young people.
This year the Youth Cabinet was restructured in order to make it more democratic and geographically representative. This means that it is now more focused on hearing as many young people's views as possible from as many different areas. Electronic elections were held in a majority of schools throughout the county and the two people from each area who received the most votes were given places on the Cabinet.
